I am excited to announce a new publication with Dr. John Zelenski in Springer Nature's Current Psychology titled "Why are males not doing these environmental behaviors?: exploring males’ psychological barriers to environmental action".

Across two studies, we see that males are less likely to do pro-environmental behavior and have more Dragons' psychological barriers to these behaviors (Gifford, 2011). We also found that, overall, participants perceived individuals doing PEB as feminine. There were, however, differences across sexes and individual behaviors (see Figure below).

Interestingly, there was an association between the PEB males reported doing the least frequently and the behaviors they reported as more feminine. This suggests (preliminarily) that the feminine perception of PEB may be a new psychological barrier not previously studied.
In the paper, we discuss ways that future research can build on these suggestions with the ultimate goal of more effectively promoting environmentalism to males.
